The most likely place in the United States to catch a five-pound brook trout and landlocked salmon is deep in the Maine woods. This fabled fisherman’s paradise is the Rapid River, and getting there isn’t easy – the only public access is by hiking, biking or boat.
The Rapid flows just 3.2 miles to Lake Umbagog from Lower Richardson Lake near Rangeley and drops about 180 feet. The steep, short run creates a rush of water, making it the fastest flowing river east of the Mississippi.
This river’s wild, technical character and its selective trout require anglers to be prepared for anything. That was the inspiration for our Rapid River Vest Pack. First introduced 10 years ago, it has earned a five-star customer rating and has been continually updated to stay cutting edge. This season, we listened carefully to customer feedback and refreshed it with 23 new features.
The new design includes rod holder, tube holder and a back pocket to hold a hydration bladder. Thirteen exterior and seven interior pockets include one that’s waterproof and removable to protect your phone, camera and cash. They’re all gear specific, designed to spare you from fumbling through every pocket for split shot and tippet.
We used our backpack expertise to design a suspension system that makes hauling all that gear a breeze. We think it’s the most innovative, comfortable fly-fishing vest on the market.
Our developers make yearly pilgrimages to the Rapid and many other Maine rivers, streams and ponds, always returning with tall tales and bright ideas. Then they perfect each detail in L.L.Bean fishing vests and other products, including our revolutionary stitchless waders and new Apex Fly Rod.
