Everybody knows that the Fourth of July ends with fireworks, but how do you get the day started? Here in Freeport, we started with the annual L.L.Bean 4th of July 10K, where 1,800 people kicked off their weekend with fresh air and exercise while they supported a good cause!
The race kicked off at 7:30 a.m. and took runners from downtown Freeport past scenic Porter’s Cove and into South Freeport, before looping around to arrive back at our flagship store. Racers were treated to views of farms, woods and ocean, while shoppers on Main Street watched the huge group of runners take the town by storm.
“We had great racing weather and some runners almost broke records,” says Corporate Merchant Manager and Race Director Jim Gott. “Women’s winner, Michelle Lilienthal missed the course record by three seconds!” Visit Cool Running to view the full race results.
The 10K was followed by a 1-Mile Family Fun Run/Walk – a little less strenuous than a 10K, perhaps, but a great opportunity to spend the morning being active outdoors (and have a lot of fun, too).
All proceeds from the 10K and Fun Run support the YMCA of Southern Maine Casco Bay Branch, one of L.L.Bean’s partners and an organization dedicated to engaging young people in active, healthy lifestyles. Since 2001, the annual race has raised almost $200,000 – the equivalent of sending more than 1,300 kids to a week of summer day camp.
It was a great race for a great cause, and it also marked the start of Summer in the Park here in Freeport. We’ve got big plans for the summer, with free concerts and events for the whole family.
