With fishing poles in hand, 63 local children showed up on June 7th to celebrate the 45th Annual L.L.Bean Fishing Derby on a local pond near Freeport. The anglers varied from ages 3 through 12 — all armed with worms and bobbers.
“It was a gorgeous day and the kids had a great time,” says Facilities’ Nancy Litchfield. “Seeing their enthusiasm and smiles made it fun for all of us. We hope that the derby got kids excited to go fishing! We’re extremely grateful for every volunteer who contributed to the derby’s success.”
A bright and sunny afternoon offered plenty of fishing excitement for the group. In total, 34 fish were reeled to the surface. Three-year-old Waylon led the pack, winning the grand prize – a brand new L.L.Bean Angler II Fly Rod Outfit – after catching the biggest fish, measuring 19 inches. It’s said that you never master the art of fishing—you simply learn more as you go. One thing is for certain, these young anglers are well on their way.
