A Convenient Truth: Seersucker and Global Cooling

India has primarily three climates: hot, hotter and hottest. Its northernmost part is at 32 degrees longitude, which is about even with Dallas, Texas. Ever been in Dallas in the summer? Those temperatures are considered comfortable in Bangalore.

It isn’t surprising that India gave the world the best way to stay cool without air conditioning – seersucker. The textile designers created a slack-tension weaving technique that made the fabric pucker. The crinkles held the fabric slightly away from the skin, allowing the air to circulate.

By the late 1700s, seersucker was a summer staple in Europe. Soon after, it was a favorite in the American Colonies and came to be the official uniform of the Southern gentleman. The world felt like a cooler place.
