Celebrate Wicked Good Lobstah Next Weekend at the Maine Lobster Festival

Here in Maine, we love all kinds of seafood. But whether you’re a Mainer or “from away,” there’s one crustacean that’s truly worth celebrating: the lobster. That’s why we look forward, each summer, to the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, Maine, which has been serving up lobster rolls and bowls of bisque since 1947.

Lobstering is a large part of Maine’s economy and maritime heritage, and a source of great pride for Mainers. In fact, lobster territories are often passed down from generation to generation in order to maintain family tradition. Maine lobstermen are extremely dedicated to their work – last year alone, they hauled in over 127-million pounds of lobster! Maine’s mid-coast region has long been a major center for lobstering activity, so it is only natural that Rockland has been home to the Maine Lobster Festival for over 65 years.

On July 31, the five-day celebration of Homarus americanus kicks off with the unique Sea Goddess Coronation, in which local pageant contestants compete for college scholarships and positions as spokeswomen for the Maine lobster industry. Lobster crate races, musical performances, and a steady supply of delicious lobster are also key components of the celebration. The festival boasts the “World’s Largest Lobster Cooker” and they’re not kidding – last year they dished out 20,000 pounds of shellfish! In addition to lobster, you’ll also find crab, clams, mussels and other seafood at the festival’s Food Tent alongside carnival favorites like fried dough and corn on the cob.

Does all this talk about lobsters make you curious how they fit into ocean ecosystems? Stop by the Marine Tent – it’s great for kids or anyone interested in the Gulf of Maine. If you’re interested in learning where your seafood comes from and how these animals function in the wild, be sure to explore the tent’s interactive saltwater displays.

When you’re ready to take a break from all that lobster, you won’t want to miss the all-you-can-eat blueberry pancake breakfasts. You can also participate in the 10K road race – a great way to enjoy scenic Rockland and burn some calories before tucking in to a Maine feast. Other fun events include a parade, art show, carnival rides and musical performances by David Cassidy and the Spin Doctors. Don’t miss your chance to join the festivities and celebrate summer like a Mainer!
