Loyal Citizen Clothing encompasses all things Maine, taking design inspiration from their home state. Jeff Lauzier and Julian Redman first had the idea for the line after growing tired of seeing overpriced and tired T-shirt designs for men, having both worked together in the high-end retail market. Together they decided to create their own artwork and begin handprinting tees themselves.
One year after their idea first came to fruition, they named their line Loyal Citizen Clothing. “We vowed to have everything be 100% American-made,” explains Lauzier. “Everything from our tees to the recycled neck labels are made by hand and created in the US.”
Loyal Citizen produced two L.L.Bean-exclusive T-shirts inspired by life in New England. “We wanted to create a lobster tee that everyone, even Mainers, would actually wear,” says Lauzier. They also designed a Scenic Gems tee, inspired by a book cover that Redman found in his Grandmother’s attic.
“The book cover had an illustration of an elk, which haven’t existed in Maine since the early 1900s,” says Lauzier. “This design is an ode to what Maine was like in the 1890s.”
Lauzier and Redman both consider themselves history nuts, so many of their T-shirt designs come from a found drawing, map or piece of Maine history. Loyal Citizen is the tee you wear when you want to show your Maine pride and support domestic production.
