A Boot that Inspired an Ice Cream Flavor

Warning: This blog post might make your mouth water!

What do you get when you combine award-winning old-fashioned vanilla ice cream, rich chocolate brownie bites and a swirl of sweet caramel? A one-of-a-kind adventure in ice cream created just for us – Muddy Bean Boots.

Muddy Bean Boots - L.L.Bean & Giffords Ice Cream

L.L.Bean partnered with Gifford’s Ice Cream, a family-owned Maine company, to create this special-edition flavor in honor of L.L.Bean’s 100th anniversary celebration. Gifford’s only works with local farms and dairies to craft their flavors, and though just one spoonful speaks for itself, industry awards say even more. In the past seven years, Gifford’s has won World’s Best for its Chocolate, French Vanilla, and Old Fashioned Vanilla ice creams as well as Grade A & Ice Cream Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo, the industry’s most important competition.

Watch the video to learn about the creation of an ice cream flavor inspired by our iconic product – L.L.Bean Boots.

Stop by the L.L.Bean Freeport flagship store for a free sample of Muddy Bean Boots (while supplies last) Saturday, March 17 (11-2 p.m.).

Muddy Bean Boots will be available for purchase at Gifford’s Ice Cream’s five family-owned stands throughout Maine beginning March 16 and at 1,500 independent stands, restaurants, colleges, universities, hospitals and hotels throughout New England; New York; New Jersey; Maryland; Washington, DC; and Virginia. To find a Gifford’s Ice Cream location email or call 207-474-9821.

L.L.Bean and Gifford’s will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Muddy Bean Boots ice cream to support Healthy Hometowns, a nonprofit Maine-based program that engages young people and their families in active, healthy lifestyles through outdoor recreation.

A classic! Looks so delicious. Wish we could buy it in Colorado!

  2. Maureen | March 20, 2012 | 1:31 pm

Not fair to show something as delicious as this and not be able to buy it here in Virginia.

  3. April | March 20, 2012 | 9:28 pm

Why can’t it be sold in stores so everyone can have the chance to try it???

    • Sara | L.L.Bean | March 26, 2012 | 2:10 pm

Hi, April. Unfortunately Gifford’s Ice Cream is only available in select states. Feel free to contact Gifford’s at or 207-474-9821 to find out more about where you can find Muddy Bean Boots Ice Cream. – Sara

I haven’t found a place that sells it yet…why not make it more accessible so more people can try it? Can’t afford to drive to one of the “chosen” places…

  5. Sandra | June 15, 2012 | 2:57 pm

It’s very delicious! Nice and creamy but not too much chocolate.

  6. Estee | July 17, 2012 | 2:21 pm

We had a Gifford”s here in Baltimore, MD, but it only lasted a short time and closed. I wonder why? They probably had no business, never advertised at all and nobody knew where it was.

This article is with strange timing, isn’t it?
    The ice cream sounds delicious.
Gifford’s Old Fashioned Vanilla is my very favorite tasting flavor!
Of course, adding “Vitamin C–Chocolate” and caramel boot colors will add class, I suppose!
